Wheat – Rolled
What is Wheat?
Wheat, which is high in starch, is a suitable substitute for maize grain, and can be readily incorporated and blended into the rations of dairy cows and other animals.
Wheat has more protein, less fiber and a higher TDN (Total Digestible Nutrients) value than barley and oats. It is comparable to corn in terms of energy, but with higher protein content and a more rapid rate of starch digestion.
As local maize becomes less readily available, wheat products are being utilized more in animal rations. Wheat would be one of the large inputted AG-Feed commodities used worldwide, because of its base available and cost affective nutritional values.
Ideally, wheat should be processed, either rolled or ground, to improve its digestibility.
Other forms of Wheat are the Wheat Pellet (which is pure wheat) and Wheat Bran Pellet.
Features and Benefits:
- Wheat is a very high energy source, one of the leader’s over all AG-Feed commodities.
- Protein levels are at an average level, low enough to be fed in spring and works all year round.
- It has very high Starch available and is low in Fibre.
- Wheat is the #1 Cereal to increase Milk Proteins and keeps the Fat-Protein Milk Ratio’s in the upper range.
- Key benefits we see with Wheat are elevated production, low inclusion rates over TMR (Total Mixed Ration).
- Added benefit Wheat is a great cow conditioning tool.
Feeding Recommendations:
It is suggested that Wheat and Wheat Pellets are slowly included into animal rations, as Wheat can cause acute digestion problems in ruminants. Consult your Nutritionist or Farm Consultant to work out the optimal inclusion level for your particular situation.
Storage:
Like all feedstuffs, Wheat Grain and Pellets should be stored dry, in bulk bins or placed on cement slabs (away from vermin and covered and protected from the weather accordingly).
